Crate & Barrel, based in Ill., confirmed May 27 that Atlantw is one of the metrooareas it’s scouting for potential locations for CB2. Anothed CB2 is slated to open in Miami’es South Beach later this year, a Crate Barrel spokeswoman said. In all, Crate Barrel has launched just sixCB2 stores. In recent CB2 officials have been focusing on new locationss inSouthern California. The company tends to locate in areadwith high-profile regional shopping centers, lifestyle centerw and freestanding sites. CB2 officials have been lookingg in densely populated areas with an average household income in excessof $50,000. Its prototyps store is about 12,000 square feet.
While Crater & Barrel would not confirm what parts ofAtlantaz it’s been considering, sources familiad with the search say it’s focused on Midtowjn and West Midtown, where new residential and retail redevelopment projectsd are still under way. In Midtown, Daniel Corp. and are developing 12th Midtown, a $2 billion mixed-usse project built on a site that severalo years ago was little more than an Atlantw nightclub and a couple ofparkinhg lots. Daniel and Selig Enterprises have made a presentation to officiald from CB2 inrecent months, according to sourcex familiar with the process.
The projectd will eventually feature more than 3 million square feet of residentialp andcommercial space. CB2 would be the first national retailer to locate on the Midtown a section of Peachtree Street that economicc development boosters hope will eventually becomee a retail destination much like Madison Avenue in New York City or the Magnificent Milein Chicago. Daniel’s and Selig Enterprises’ project is meant to be a cornerstons of theMidtown Mile. However, ’e Colony Square and Jamestown’s 999 Peachtree will also be key along with 1100 Peachtree and 1180 to alesser extent, brokera and developers said. CB2 could be an importanf catch for theMidtown Mile.
Developers, however, really need to land a much largerr anchor store to give theconcepyt momentum, said Maranda Walker-Dowell, a seniot director with CB .’s retail servicesw group. Barney’s, which has a co-opl store in Buckhead’s Phipps Plaza, has been scoutingf the area in the past year to18 “The Midtown Mile need s an anchor store to start creating that critical mass of Walker-Dowell said.
